I bought a set of 3 pets for my 5-year-old granddaughter, and she was thrilled (I felt tempted to tell her that it wasn't from Santa, but I didn't so he got the credit). She carried them all over the house for a few days and put them to sleep for the night. Kids have to be instructed and supervised while playing with it, especially girls with long hair should be reminded to keep their hair away from the toy. Be prepared to stock on batteries.
